December 06 The cookies my students sent meToday is my last TA session this quarter. When I walked into the classroom, my students sent me a sent me a box of cookies and a letter of thanks. It was a big surprise to me. I was moved when I looked at their squiggly handwriting "谢谢你帮我们练习中文." That's probably the most complicated sentence they can write. I asked them why they sent me this gift. They said I was a good TA. Honestly speaking, I think I just did what I'm supposed to do. This letter is an additional award to me.
I must confess that Americans did much better than Chinese at thanking people who have helped them. When faculty leaves IR/PS, we write letter of thanks with bless from all class. However, most Chinese would take it for granted that professor gives lectures becausethey have paid. This tradition perhaps derives from the foundation of USA when Thanksgiving became the first American festival. If I was asked what I love America most, I would not answer better living conditions, American dream, democracy, equality or the most developed economy. On the contrary, it is the tranditional ethics, mutual help, mutual respect, and mutual concern, which most Chinese neglect. When someone leaves, we would wish him better future. When someone loses her close relative, all the people would comfort her. That is the inherence of American spirit.
